Chapter Eleven

The conversation moved from intense, life-and-death, to silly things, but it felt easy and right. We sat and talked until the sky grew dark outside the window. I didn’t know how I could feel so comfortable and so excited at the same time. Talking to Alarick was like getting high and never having to come down. I wanted to ask him a million questions, and I never got tired of hearing his answers. I wanted to know every detail about everything in his life. We took turns asking each other questions until I knew all of his favorites, from his favorite song to his favorite color, and he knew about my family, my drawings, and my love of cookies.

“We forgot to eat dinner,” I said, stifling a yawn. “I don’t think I’ve ever forgotten a meal before.”

“You hungry?” Alarick asked, picking up his phone. “I can call for food. We don’t even have to leave your room.”

“You’re going to have to leave eventually.”

“Am I?” he asked, cocking an eyebrow.

“Well, it’s not your room.”

“Are you kicking me out?” He leaned in, looking up at me with those unfathomably deep blue eyes.

“You better not let anyone know about those puppy dog eyes,” I said, laughing. “Your reputation will be ruined.”

“I don’t care about my reputation.”

“Do you say that to all the girls?” I asked, shoving his shoulder playfully.

“What other girls?” he asked, not smiling. “I don’t remember a single other girl in the world. There’s only you, Timberlyn. There’s only ever been you.”

I paused, and it was just long enough for him to close the distance between us. His lips found mine without a second’s hesitation. His kiss was firm and certain. His mouth pulled mine into its rhythm, and his hand slid behind my head, cradling it as he lay me down. His body shifted to cover mine, his massive form somehow not crushing me. His weight and size felt comforting and protective instead of threatening.

For a minute, I trembled under him, scared of my own ineptitude. As we kissed, I felt his hardness grow between us, and my breath came quicker, my pulse racing with it.

“Tell me if you want me to stop,” Alarick murmured, breaking our kiss. He smoothed my red hair back and gazed down at me, his eyes clouded with desire as he slowly rocked his hips between mine.

“Tell me if I’m doing anything wrong,” I whispered.

“If it feels good, you’re doing it right. Let me make you feel good, Timberlyn.” His mouth found mine again, his kiss deeper and slower but just as passionate. I held onto his words and let everything else melt away. I lost myself to the sensations coursing through my body, the tingling he sent through me building until I could hardly stand it. Kissing him felt intoxicatingly indulgent. After so many years of being tormented, I deserved to be adored for a minute.

I felt like I’d lived the past years in a waking dream, walking through them in a haze of numbness, every moment in survival mode.
